smartphones and being complacent about studies:

1.   How many hours per day do your kids use their cell phones?

2.   Which apps are your kids interested?

3.    Do your kids show any inclination towards an app? If yes, which one?

4.   Find the reason behind their favorite apps? And what they like?

5.   Are your kids compromising study time on their favorite apps?

6.    Do your kids use the cell phone while studying?

7.    Do your kids chat with friends during study hours?

8.   For how long can your kids concentrate on studies without looking at their cell phones?

9.    Is the smartphone time eating up their bedtime?

10.    Do your kids feel sleepy in school or teachers are observing lazy and sleepy heads?

The answer to the ten questions above is your first wake up alarm. Pick these clues to know whether your kids are wasting time on smartphones instead of studying.

Using smartphones for entertainment or useful tasks is a great idea, but if it intrudes with the academic performance of your kid, it’s time to shake things up a bit!

How can you help your kids in maintaining excellent academic performance?

We suggest parents take a few stringent steps to help their children in performing well academically.

1.    Do no snatch their phone!

Getting poor grades does not make your kid less talented or poor in studies. Academic performance of each kid varies but, guidance at the right age and the right time is essential.

Smartphone addiction can be a big reason for your kid’s lack of concentration; however, snatching the cell phone will only imprint a negative picture on your kid’s mind. Instead, introduce “No Phone Time “as a new house rule.

2.    Talk to your kids

Talking and reciprocating is critical.

Ask your kids, “why are you facing a problem with academic scores?”, “Is something bothering you?”, “Is there any peer pressure at school?”

It is imperative to diagnose the reason behind your kid’s poor academic grades. If it is due to smartphone addiction, educate them on how they can have fun on the phone after study hours.

3.    Talk to teachers

Teachers observe your kids in school and at times notice your kids’ interest or disinterest in studies very categorically. If your kid shows withdrawal from studies and spends time on their gadgets, teachers can be a great source of information and help!

4.    Make learning fun

Often kids find studying dull and dreary. It is always a good idea to change your kids’ monotonous learning pattern into fun-learning.

–   Change their study spots often (going outdoors is a great idea!)

–   Find out tools and tricks online to make study fun for your kids

–   Give practical examples to help your kids relate

–   Teach while doing routine chores like buying a packet of chips at the supermarket

–    Act and recite with your kids

–   Host group study hours at times (not every time)

5.    Be a part of your kid’s study hours

Kids need a supervisor to feel a little pressure. Sit in your kids’ room and do your work while they study. Do not try to pull their mobile phone or set it aside. Keep a constant eye at them to keep them under check.

Help your kids with their queries and problems to get connected to their academic curriculum.

6.    Go for a primary or public device

Your kids do not need a private phone. Having a simple public device is more than sufficient.

Public devices should be kept at the same spot. And need no movement during study hours and bedtime.

7.    No internet during study hours

If you have a Wi-Fi system at home, switch it off during study hours. Have the same rule for all family members to show support towards the students at home.

Small initiatives like these can be beneficial in accelerating your kids’ performance.
